A rare and early Australian silver kilt pin by Gerrard & Sleep of Ballarat circa 1859 engraved 'Caledonian Society of Ballarat, Established 1858, Third Annual Gathering, 1st Jan.1861, 1st Prize Awarded To Robert Paton Esq. For Members Race In Highland Costume' stamp 'G&S' under the hinge of the pin. Gerrard & Sleep only operated in Ballarat from 1856-1859 making this piece one of the earliest known pieces of Ballarat jewellery. The only other known datable piece by Gerrard & Sleep (a 22ct gold ring) was sold by Leski Auction on 27/6/2012 for $42,000 9 cm diameter, 140 grams total
