Description:
A George III musical bracket clock, J Thwaites, London, circa 1811, the mahogany brass lined bell top case with rococo finials, each angle mounted with brass herms trailing leafy buds. The sides with brass handles above foliate case sound frets with quarter frets to the brass lined front and rear doors. The moulded base raised on leafy scroll cast brass feet. The enamel one piece dial with two smaller subsidiary dials in break arch, and strike/not strike and the tune selector dial. Main dial with Roman and Arabic chapter ring, signed J. Thwaites- London- no. 4763. Blued steel hands throughout. The triple fusee movement with verge escapement, hour striking on bell, the music playing on twelve bells on a six tune musical barrel. The glass inset rear door opening to a rectangular plate engraved with scrolling foliage, 70 cm high, 40 cm wide, 30 cm deep. Provenance: 'Important Clocks', Christie's London, July 11, 2003. Other Notes: John Thwaites was a prolific Clockmaker and made a large number of clock movements for the well known Clockmakers of the time including Dutton, Allam, Barraud and Debois. John Thwaites was master of the Clockmakers Company in 1815, 1819 and 1820.
