(Van Diemen's Land) Permission to Marry, 1850, The humble petition of Gavin Scott, a Ticket of Leave Holder per John Brewer, and Phoebe Mansfield, Free, residing in the district of Hobart Town, craving permission to marry.', The request was addressed to the Governor, Sir William Thomas Denison. Gavin Scott was understood to be 'in business as Timber Dealer and his means are amply sufficient to maintain a wife. (the) petitioners are of the Protestant Religion, and wish the ceremony of matrimony to be performed by the Reverend Mr Simpson of O'Briens Bridge.', Gavin Scott, one of 200 convicts transported on the John Brewer on 1 Dec.1841 had been convicted at Glasgow Court and sentenced for life on 30 Sept.1841. Phoebe Mansfield, born in New Norfolk in 1830 married Gavin in Hobart in 1851. They soon after moved to Launceston, giving birth one year later to their first son Gavin Mansfield. 5 years later they had a daughter Lily, and ten years later, another son named Gavin. They were to have two more daughters and a son: Florence, born in 1864, Arthur William in 1866, and Emma Ada in 1869.
