An account of the voyages undertaken by the order of His Present Majesty for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, and successively performed by Commodore Byron, Captain Carteret, Captain Wallis and Captain Cook... drawn up from the journals which were kept by the several commanders and from the papers of Joseph Banks, Esq. London, 1773. Three volumes quarto, 51 maps and plates, some folding, contemporary diced calf well rebacked in style, spines with gilt ornaments. Some foxing or browning. An attractive set of the official account of Cook's momentous first voyage around the world, including the first published chart of the east coast of Australia. This is an example of the first issue, before the addition of the Strait of Magellan chart and the ' Description of the cuts' leaf. Apart from its priority, the first edition is to be preferred for the superior impressions of the plates and maps.
