Two woodblock prints by Paul Jacoulet (French/Japan 1902-1960), Daikoku, God of Wealth personified by a courtesan of Shimbara, Kyoto, Japan (Fr. Daikoku, dieu de la Richesse) printed title in French l.r. below image, 39.5 x 30. cm (image), 'Les Jades Chinoises', Surimono, Jacoulet was born in France but moved to Japan with his family at the age of four where he remained. Most of his portraits depict the subjects engaged in routine tasks but at the same time also reflect insights into the sitter's personality. The painstaking detail of these prints is apparent at a glance. Jacoulet is reputed to have sometimes used as many as 300 blocks to create a single print
