Description:
A Madura Island drum, in slit gong form, with two elaborate finials of fearsome dragon design, on either side is incised the Dutch coat of arms with two crowned snakes indicating manufacture date being in the early part of the 20th century, hole to side of drum, Indonesia. Provenance: Purchased from an old collection in the United States, Arthur Stannard Vernay 1877- 1960. A very successful antique dealer to the high society in New York opened his own shop in 1906 on 45th Street, just off Fifth Avenue. By 1920 he was able to indulge his interest in collecting animal specimens for the American Museum of natural History and went on a number of collecting expeditions, the first of which was in 1923 when he and Colonel John C. Faunthorpe travelled to India. His last expedition was to Africa in 1946. Vernay visited Tibet-being among the first Westerners to visit Lhasa - Siam, the Malay Peninsula, and Burma. The AMNH opened a room called the Vernay-Faunthorpe hall of south Asiatic Mammals in 1930. 74 x 88 x 36 cm.
