Description:
A fine bamboo carving of a sage, early Qing Dynasty, 17th-18th century, superbly carved in flowing robes, wearing a long whispy beard, with his hair pulled up in a topknot, seated on a rockwork platform holding a basket containing medicinal herbs, his staff at his side, 15.6 cm high, fitted box. Reference: a very similar figure illustrated in bamboo, wood and ivory carvings, the complete Collection of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong 2002, vol 44, p. 44, also no. 42 See Sotheby's Hong Kong 7/4/2015, the Robert H Blumenfield Collection of Chinese bamboo carvings, lot 3006 for a very similar carving.
