A Chinese famille rose 'Butterfly and Melon' wall vase (Qianlong Nian Zhi mark). Wall vases, sometimes called wall pockets or sedan chair vases, were one of the Qianlong Emperor's favourite articles, and there remain to this day, some 320 examples in the Palace Museum, Beijing. The Qianlong emperor frequently wrote or ordered poetry panels, of excellent quality. Imperial wedding box style, the rounded sides set over a low foot ring, the domed cover delicately painted with magpies soaring amidst pink prunus blossoms all against an egg-yolk yellow ground, the lower part similarly decorated. A Chinese late Qing Dynasty flambe glazed Fanghu vase (Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi mark). A rare Chinese vase, known as fanghu or arrow vase, covered with a flambe glaze. The glaze has been trickled to a relatedly even line around the foot rim, consistent with red glazes of the 18th century.
