Description:
A fine Chinese stucco head of Luohan, song Dynasty (960-1279), the face with a fierce, all-knowing expression, with wide inset glass eyes to provide a sense of realism, and pronounced forehead, possibly to signify the famous luohan Rahula, the Son of Buddha, 34 cm high, with black granite stand, reference: for another song dynasty stucco head of a Luohan, please refer to the 'H.K. Burnet collection', Sotheby's, London 3 April 1941, lot 78, for an example of another larger than life stucco head that was recently sold in Melbourne, please refer to Mossgreen, Melbourne, 19 November 2013, Lot 71, catalogue note: the Luohans (Arhats in Sanskrit), were respected attendants to the Buddha, in China and are very powerful images of worship, as they were frequently illustrated to represent actual people. Their likeness was often drawn from revered abbots from monasteries who had reached enlightenment nirvana, through benevolence, power and prayer. The great task of the Luohan was to stay on earth and protect the Buddhist faith.
