Description:
A Victorian needlework sampler by M J McMahon, Long Beach 1860. 26 x 19 cm. Attributed to Mary Jane McMahon, the daughter of James McMahon, an Irishman who arrived in Port Phillip in 1841. McMahon established a 1,000 acre squatting track that covered the coastal strip from Mordialloc Creek to Kananook Creek, now the suburbs of Aspendale, Edithvale, Chelsea, Bonbeach and Carrum. This land was put up for sale after it was first surveyed in 1865, after which James opened the Half-Way House, later to become the Carrum Hotel. James, and his wife Maria (nee Kelly) had six children: John, Selina, Thomas, James, Mary Jane and Elizabeth. James died in 1872 while visiting his son on the New Zealand goldfields, Maria died in 1902.
