An Australian silver tray by William Edwards of Melbourne, circa 1865, engraved with scrolling grapevines within a cast border of classical masks, mythical beasts & grape filled urns, marked 'W. Edwards/Melbourne' 23.5 cm diameter, 530 grams. For a similar salver with pierced cast border see The Altman Collection, National Gallery of Victoria. The border is copied from a design used by the London silversmith Steven Smith. It is possible that Edwards cast the border from a Smith piece.
