Description:
An impressive Victorian silver four piece tea and coffee service in original fitted oak box, the matching set with repousse embossed florals and fancy trellis decorated panels in the French manner, applied floral and leaf finials to the tea and coffee pots, acanthus leaf thumb pieces to the handles, the sugar bowl and cream jug internally washed with gilt. Matching hallmarks to all for London 1859 by John Samuel Hunt, each further embossed 'Hunt & Roskell, Late Storr & Mortimer'. In original blue velvet lined fitted oak box with brass side handles, inlaid vacant plaque to top and original key. Note: Originally established in 1843, Hunt & Roskell, were a firm of manufacturing and retail jewellers and silversmiths, originally founded by Paul Storr in 1819, trading as Storr & Co. (1819-22), Storr & Mortimer (1822-38), Mortimer & Hunt (1838-43) and then Hunt & Roskell (1843-97). Hunt & Roskell had retail premises at 156 New Bond Street and a manufacturing workshops at 26 Harrison Street, near Clerkenwell. John Samuel Hunt, who had assisted Storr from the start, continued as a partner until his death in 1865, when he was succeeded by his son, John Hunt (d.1879)
