Description:
A carved and incised buffalo horn scrimshaw by Louis M. F. Gauvin, dated February 15th 1870, further incised 'Louis McGauvin Maker, Tambo Barco, P.W. Mulalley, Tambo Inn Barcoo River' with a tall ship and an Advance Australia coat of arms, 36 cm long. Note: Another two carved cow-horns are associated with the present item and show similarities in the form and decoration with clippers in sail, pseudo coats of arms and mottos 'Advance Australia.' The three works are incised with the name maker 'Louis M.F. Gauvin' and were produced in Western Queensland. The individual inscriptions, that for 1863 inscribed to K.J. Morison of Cadargah (a lot that is the present sale) and for the other that is dated October 4th, 1864, suggests that they were presentation pieces., See John Houstone, Engraved Horns with Australian Associations, Australiana, November 1995, pp. 93-98, Further Note, For one of the aforementioned example see: The Collection of Paul Otto Taubert & Jewellery and Decorative Arts, Sotheby's, Melbourne, May 2001, lot 461
