Chinese carved lacquer wooden image of a Luohan, circa 17th-18th century, the Buddhist Saint is seated in a position of meditation, his hands resting at his knees, his smiling face with an expression of benevolent wisdom, his moustaches, beard and eyebrows arranged in stylised curls; his luxuriant hair falls in waves to his shoulders. His robes are arranged in graceful folds; a short undergarment tied at his waist. Traces of the original patterns of his clothes remain; more recent auspicious characters to the reverse have been added. Consecration aperture to the rear. Height 21 ½ inches (55 cm)
