Description:
Fine Australian native timber specimen table top, circa 1840. Circular, centered by a five point star and finely veneered with a radiating sun burst parquetry pattern in Australian timbers including casuarina, cedar, blackwood, silky oak, eucalyptus, blue gum, river oak & red mahogany within a cedar border. Crafted by William Cook who was sentenced to eight years transportation arriving in the Colony of New South Wales in August 1820 aboard The Mangles. Prior to transportation Cook had lived a very colourful life serving in the English Navy under Lord Nelson & saw action at the battle of Trafalgar. Cook gained his freedom in 1826 then settled in the Hunter Valley where this table was produced. Diameter 98 cm. Provenance: By direct family descent. Exhibition or specimen table tops that can be directly attributed to a maker are extremely rare.
