Description:
1960 Rome, XVII Summer Olympics: silver second place Winners medal, 68 mm diameter, with bronze metal wreath with name of sport 'Nuoto' (Swimming), and bronze chain of olive leaves (the medal was presented without chain to the winners of team events). Designed by Giuseppe Cassioli, minted by Artistice Fiorenti in Florence, the medal is in very good condition and extremely rare. (Rome was the first Summer Olympiad where the name of the sport appeared on the medal in accordance with Rule 41 which stated that after June 1956 all winners medals must contain the name of the sport. Also the first time a medal was created with a method to suspend the medal from the athlete's neck. Australia's silver Medallists in swimming at 1960 Rome Olympics were: Murray Rose (1500m freestyle); Neville Hayes (200m butterfly); Mens 4 x 100m Medley Relay team (D.Thiele, T.Gathercole, N.Hayes, G.Shipton); Womens 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay team (Dawn Fraser, I.Konrads, L.Crapp, A.Colquhon); Womens 4 x 100m Medley Relay team (M.Wilson, R.Lassig, J.Andrew, Dawn Fraser).
