Description:
Sumba Ikat (hinggi kombu), Eats Suma, early 20th century. Man's waist or hip cloth, cotton, dyes, warp ikat,full-length central seam. Zoomorphic animal motifs and stylised Dutch coat of arms. 270 cm high, 110 cm wide - incl. fringe. 233 cm high, 110 cm wide - excl. fringe. Note. The motif of the Dutch coat of arms with its crowned lions shown in the second band highlights the Dutch presence in the Netherlands Indies, and it came into being during the reign of Queen Wilhelmina (r. 19=890-1948). The motif in the central band of this hinggiis an adaptation of a design from Indian patola textiles, prestigious trade cloths. A textile of this kind was one of the most important items used in a ritual gift exchange system, so prominent in traditional Sumbanese culture. A similar Sumbahinggi kombu with Dutch crowned lions is in the collection of the National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden, inv.nr.5643-1. Provenance: Heirloom collection of the Augustine Umbu Windi family, Sumba.
