Description:
A rare and exceptional Chinese gilt-bronze seated figure of Mahakala, (Nag.po.chen.po), Defender of the Faith,Early Ming Dynasty, 15th century. The crowned deity wearing an elaborate apron, a skull cup in one hand and standing on a supine figure, supported on a double-lotus throne, the details very finely cast. 19 cm high, 14 cm wide. Exhibited, 'The Art of Tibet, the Land of the Snow', The Gryphon Gallery, Melbourne State College, 1982, cat no 29, p11, where it is described as 'a particularly fine casting'.
