A magnificent Japanese bronze bird sculpture, late Meiji period (1868-1912). A Tokyo school bronze with typical western influence, superbly modelled and cast with two animated, naturalistically posed pheasants and three small songbirds perched on a rustic tree trunk, with fine engraving to the feathers and details, one pheasant with a secret compartment to its back; unmarked. Height 95 cm
