Photograph of the finish of the 1917 Melbourne Cup, black and white photograph by 'Akers & Co. Melbourne', with handwritten title to mount 'An Exciting Finish. Melbourne Cup 1917/ Won By D.W. Seaton's W Westcourt. Distance 2M Weight 8st 5lb/ Time 3m 26 3/4s. Ridden By W.H. Mclachlan, Some Chips and Loss to Borders, Framed. Overall 39 cm x 60 cm. Other Notes: Westcourt won the 1917 Melbourne Cup in a close finish with Lingle. Bill 'Midge' McLachlan, the great grandfather of trainer Lee Freedman, was the first jockey to ride three Melbourne Cup winners, on Prince Foote (1909), Comedy King (1910) and Westcourt (1917). He was also the first Australian jockey to ride for the British Royal Family.
