An unpublished manuscript of various narrative accounts written by private John P Ward, who served in 31 engagements of battle in the New Zealand Wars, John Patrick Ward was born in 1847, in Sydney, NSW, and arrived in New Zealand in March 1864. His father, as a private in HM 28th Regt. Was selected as one of the Personal Escorts of the first governor as NZ, Captain Hobson R.N. During his arrival in New Zealand in early 1840, Ward fought in Major Von Tempsky's Forest Ranger Company No. 2 throughout General Chute's West coat campaign of 1865-66, being present at the battles of Akotuku, Te Putahi, Otapawa, Waikoko, and the Kakaramea skirmish. Ward's written account of the final push towards new Plymouth mentions such extraordinary events as having to butcher a couple of pack horses to supplement their exhausted provision
