Description:
A framed enamelled rectangular plaque of Bodhidharma crossing the Yangtze river, attributed to Wang Qi (1884 - 1937), Republic period, the Buddha dressed in long flowing robes, carrying books of sutras and a large hat on his back, riding just a blade of reed crossing the Yangyze river, titled 'Crossing the River on a Blade of Reed', inscribed and signed Wang Qi, with his seal Tao Zhai, 24 cm x 37 cm. Provenance: private Collection NSW, purchased during late 1950s or early 1960s in Hong Kong. note: the plaque was taken out of its frame, revealing traces of a rail running in the centre, and traces of rough cloth covering the unglazed back, the signs of the firing process particularly during the Republic period where the plaques were placed on a rough cloth to prevent it from warping, and then on a rack for firing
