Description:
Rare silver mounted emu egg cigar holder attributed to Wendt, with a naturally modelled base having cut tree trunks, raising a scantily clad aboriginal man and woman holding a pivoting and hinged covered egg with a kangaroo head thumbpiece, kangaroo finial and vacant shield, enclosing a velvet lined interior, possibly with a gilt divider. Marks: unmarked. Combined weight 980 grams; height 21 cm. Provenance: Vizard Foundation.2001 Geelong Exhibition no 50. Notes: This work is almost certainly by Wendt when compared with a marked example in JBH Vol II pp 76, compare the design concept, the details of the figures, the banding on the egg and the thumbpiece.
