Rare Sutton panoramic plate of Australian gold Mining Town Dunolly, circa early 1860s exposed curved-glass plate showing view from the outskirts of the town with various buildings visible including Colonial Bank, Caledonian Hotel, Simpsons Bendigo Hotel and Brittania Hotel. This image was taken using a Sutton panoramic camera fitted with a Thomas Ross wide angle lens, the first Sutton cameras utilized Thomas Sutton's lens patented in 1859 but by mid-1861. Thomas Ross took over manufacture of the camera which were subsequently fitted with Ross's own, improved lens. Provenance: Discovered with a Sutton panoramic camera that was salvaged from a photographic Studio under demolition in Melbourne, date unknown. Other Notes, the buildings visible in this image are consistent with those that were present on the main street of Dunolly, circa 1861.
