Description:
A pair of Nabeshima dishes, Edo period, late 18/early19th century, each one decorated in underglaze blue, green and yellow enamels and iron-red with wheels and cherry blossoms, a 'shippo' design on the outside and 'comb' pattern on the tall foot, 21.5 cm. Provenance: The John Hilliard Collection, Literature: for similar examples see Nihon on Toji, vol 10, no 204; also Iro Nabeshima, Asahi Shimbun commemotrative exhibition catalogue, p 74 for a similar dish, dated late 17C; see Sothebys London 9/6/2004, lot 1025 for an almost identical dish
