A French black marble and gilt figural Empire clock, circa 1870. Japy Freres, Paris, set to the top with a large gilt bronze seated sphinx above a circular dial with Roman numerals surrounded by incised ibis holding swords and the goddess Maat and flanked by a pair of bronze sphinx seated on an angular base set to the front with engraved wings. Height 45 cm. Length 50 cm. Width 17 cm.
