A 19th century gun metal and brass surveyor's level reputedly from the estate of John Helder Wedge, with four screw adjustable base plate, non original wooden mount, 51 cm long. Note: John Helder Wedge, (1793-1872) migrated to van Diemen's Land from London in 1824 on an appointment as a surveyor. From this time until 1835 he participated in numerous expeditions in conjunction with the van Diemen's Land Survey Department and latterly in Victoria
