A Katabori type ivory netsuke depicting a rat and young Unsigned, 18th/19th century A good early study of an adult rat with young, the adult's eyes inlaid with amber, the young animal's fur finely detailed and inlaid with horn, possibly carved from triangular pieces remaining from koto plectrum, the ivory well patinated and showing age cracks, 3.5 cm high. The rat is the first animal of the oriental zodiac. Unlike its perception in the West, the oriental rat is associated with wealth and abundance
