Description:
1938 Packard Twelve 1607 Five-Passenger Sedan (Lhd) (Restoration Project) Engine no. A600392, Introduced in 1932 as its maker's entry into the super-luxury car market, the Packard Twelve was a carefully crafted multi-cylinder masterpiece. This most prestigious of Packards would transport presidents, royals, dictators, movie moguls and business titans around the globe in grand style for the remainder of the decade. The 67-degree Packard V-12 engine utilized a unique modified L-head valve layout. The original displacement of 445.5 cubic inches grew to 473.3 when the stroke was increased in 1935. Horsepower rose from 160 to 175 that same year. Every Twelve produced underwent a 250-mile road test at Packard's Utica, Michigan test track before delivery. The Five-Passenger Sedan offered here is one of just 566 Sixteenth Series Packard Twelves produced for 1938. That year, the V-12 was offered in two lines: 1607 models had a 134-inch wheelbase and 1608 styles were on a 139-inch wheelbase. For the Twelve's penultimate year of production, Packard modernized the styling in line with the rest of the range, including pontoon-style wings and a split vee-shaped windscreen. A measure of the craftsmanship that went into building the Packard Twelve can be seen in the fact that during the mid-1930s, approximately half of Packard's employees were dedicated to building the few thousand 'Senior' Super Eight and Twelve models issued each yearùwhile the other half built more than ten times as many 'Junior' Packards. Treasured for both their majestic elegance and impressive performance, the Packard Twelves are especially admired by connoisseurs of Classic automobiles and are highly coveted by collectors of the marque. The imposing 1938 Packard Twelve Sedan offered here is a restoration project with fantastic potential. The major mechanical components are present. Unfortunately Packard used a decal instead of a vehicle identification plate in 1938 and as with most of these cars, it's no longer present, thus the engine number is the only identifying feature of the car. The Packard has been off the road for many years in dry storage and is sold strictly as viewed, with a quantity of parts included.
