An ethnographic Ambrym ceremonial hammer (atata), 19th century, of wood, sculpted in classic ancestor form with projecting apex and robust striking section below an ancestor visage in relief, notched terminal at grip, smooth glossy patina, New Hebrides, 51 x 30 cm; Ex-coll. Galerie Pierre Loebe, Paris, acquired before 1938 note: these artefacts were employed during the important Mange society iniation or 'Grade taking' ceremonies during which pigs are slaughtered in order for the initiate to purchase a rank of higher status
