A Ship Captain's note book dated 1793, containing recipes for medical cures, scientific formul', a 'How to make' section for everyday non-medical necessities, plus many others. 80 pages, vellum covers, very legible. There are a total of 250 cures and remedies. A valuable primary folk medicine source document with a fascinating glimpse into the thinking, needs and medical knowledge of that time, the title page reads, 'Captain stone, Born at Winsham Somerset, December 29th 1753'. Family history tells US that Captain stone, a ship's Captain, was the general practitioner on his ship, the exact date of the arrival of this book in Australia is unknown. However, included with the book is a loose page with the name Mr. R(ichard) stone, Melbourne, 1 Oct l849, with on reverse a recipe for 'A Cure for the Cholera'.
