Description:
Poignant Letters from an Auckland Infantry Regt. Soldier who was killed in action during World War I, having first been wounded. The letters are from Charles Brian Taylor, at the Front, and to his sister Miss Deb Taylor at No. 1 New Zealand Hospital at Brockenhurst, where she was seemingly a Nurse. He talks of his morbidity and being in action on the Somme. He states that ['even now miles away from the line something black seems to have settled on me' ... He says a curse has settled on him and he wants to rid himself of these thoughts and that his world is a nightmare.] 12 sides of writing in total, some on Ymca letterhead and complete with one envelope. This is one of the most frank World War I documents the cataloguer has seen. The letter alludes to the horror of war, the imminence of death and the reality that has downed on the writer that he will very likely die in action, which was somewhat prophetic. Sold with 2 copies imaged on Taylor. 28007 Private Charles Brian Taylor, Auckland Infantry Regt., but from Fendalton, Christchurch, was a student of farming at Lincoln. An old boy of Wanganui Collegiate, he was too young to see overseas service in the Nzef so made his own way to the Uk where he enlisted in the Nzef and was sent to France. He was badly wounded on the Somme however, after extensive recovery was again set to the Western Front where he was killed in action 30 March 1918 aged 21. He is buried at Euston Rd. Cemetery, The Somme
