Description:
Waterloo fire brick, 9ct gold brick made in 1914 by kitchen & Bingham of park Street Sydney. Titled 'The Belgium Brick' it was raffled to raise money for charity. It was re-donated and re-sold twice, eventually raising £204. Engraved on four sides 'Blood is Thicker Than water, 20,000 men, Every one a brick. Grand total from sale & Resale of brick £204.10.0. Made by kitchen & Bingham. The Belgium brick, Donated by E.J. Card Esq. 22/9/14, Raffled for £105 won & Re-Donated by kitchen & Bingham, purchased & Re-Donated by Mr. Rainbow for £26, 29/4/15. Purchased by Mr Allen for 70 Guineas -14/5/15'. Stamped 'K.& B. 9ct', 2 cm high, 6 cm wide, 3 cm deep, 105.9 grams total. Ernest card established the gold brick Society in 1914 to support charitable and patriotic causes during World War I. In 1918 a branch of the Society was opened in Newcastle and headed by Card's associates. A gold brick he presented to the local hero, boxer, Les Darcy, is in the Maitland Regional gallery. It was Card's response to Darcy convincingly knocking out the world heavyweight champion Eddie McGoorty, at the Sydney Stadium in 1915.
