A large Chinese cinnabar and black lacquer round box, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), 18th / 19th century, deeply carved in cinnabar red overlaid over black lacquer, decorated with a central scene of scholars in a landscape with a pavilion, the sides with shaped reserves containing figures in landscapes interspersed with floral sprays against a square repeating diaper ground. 16 cm high, 29 cm diameter, condition: chips to the lacquer around the inner edge of the box base, revealing the cloth substrate. Possible relacquering around the box outer edges. One small old repair to the footrim of the box. Some small old age cracks to the inner surface of the box lid.
