1896 Athens Summer Olympics Gilt Bronze Participation Medal, gifted to prominent officials and elite athletes from this historic Olympiad, the offered medal is by W. Pittner, Austria is extremely scarce. The design is identical to the solid bronze and silvered bronze participation medals presented to most competitors and officials at these first modern Olympic Games. Beautifully preserved, the surfaces of this gem are original and lustrous as struck. Brilliant, proof-like fields and accompanied by its original, velvet-lined presentation box. Weight is 58.3 grams. The immolation of the phoenix and emergence from the ashes symbolizes the rebirth of the Olympic Games after a hiatus of more than 1500 years. [N.B.
