George III sterling silver 'Governor Bourke' coffee biggin on stand, hallmarked London, 1818, IH, with a hinged flat cover set with pointed finial and with engraved heraldic and acanthus decoration, above a pear shaped body beautifully decorated with similar acanthus and heraldic motifs and with central Bourke family crest depicting a catamountain sejant gardant ppr., collared and chained with initials RB beneath, with scroll handle, raised on a circular foot, the whole set within a matching sterling silver tri-footed stand with paw feet, with hallmarks and engraved Bourke crest, total weight 1102gm, height 32.5 cm (including stand) catalogue note: general Sir Richard Bourke was an Irish soldier who served in the British army and was Governor of NSW from 1831 to 1837. He advocated for religious tolerance, emancipation of convicts and government-funded education. A statue of Sir Richard Bourke stands outside the state library of NSW and was the first public statue to be erected in Australia. Bourke St in Melbourne and the town of Bourke were named after him.
