A pair of rare and important Irish bog yew salon chairs by Arthur Jones, Dublin 1850, The carved backs with crossed crooks, oak leaves, acorns, and clover surmounted by ancient Irish warrior busts, supported on four hoof feet complementing the carved shamrock decorated apron with later red velvet upholstery, the back signed and dated by the maker: Jones / Maker. Dublin. / 1850. Other Notes: These chairs are accompanied with a letter from the National Museum of Ireland affirming the chairs are typical of Jones' work. Jones exhibited a suite of furniture celebrating Irish history at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in London in 1851 and at the Dublin Exhibition in 1953. The suite also included a card table, now in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, as well as a wine cooler part of the National Trust in Sydney Australia, and a pole screen in the Art Institute of Chicago. A throne chair that was part of the suite was sold for £44,000 (Aud $74,380) in Scotland in 2021.
