A Japanese ivory netsuke of Blind men and elephant, late Meiji period. Depicting 5 minutely carved men climbing on an elephant, the ivory finely engraved & stained, himotoshi through the tail, on a domed oval base, two-character signature to underside. The subject is an allusion to the parable of the elephant & the blind men & an allegory on truth, subjectivity & interpretation. A group of six blind men try to describe an elephant, however their attempts are thwarted as none can describe the entire animal. height4.5 cm, W: 4.5 cm
