Description:
The Cultural Revolution: 'The May 7 collection of Terms & Expressions (Chinese – English) [Wuhan, Hubei: Revolutionary Committee for central china Normal University, 1968.] first edition, green vinyl cover, with silver text on front cover and spine, the cover having an image of a bridge over the Yangtze. This is a very rare dictionary of Chinese and English translations for common terms and revolutionary slogans used during the period of the Cultural Revolution. It also includes official translations for various important declarations by both Chairman Mao and vice Chairman Lin Piao. The print run is unknown, however it comprised a small number of copies for use by high ranking soldiers and officials exposed to foreign visitors and reporters. There are references throughout the book to vice Chairman Lin Piao, including a chapter of his quotations (pp. 201-230). After Lin was accused of plotting to assassinate Chairman Mao in 1971, most references to him and his ideas were torn from books, as Mao sought to have his name eradicated from history. The title page of the chapter of quotes by vice Chairman Lin Piao title page in this copy has been removed by the previous owner, the chapter name on the following page pasted over, and various references to him in the book blacked out in ink, including references to Mao as the great Helmsman since Lin Piao originated that title for Mao. Several manuscript additions, including ownership details on the first free endpaper. The May 7 title refers to a speech made by Mao on that day in 1966 declaring that education should be revolutionized and intellectuals should be re-educated by the peasants. A translation of the May 7 Directive is included in the book.
