Description:
Canoe bailer Taranaki region of dark brown wood, with deep scoop bowl and steep sides. Raised flared handle with rounded knob end, back section with carved face and inset paua shell eyes. Provenance: Given to one of the passengers of 'Lord Worsley' wrecked at Opunake in 1862 by Wiremu Kingi, the rebel chief, who escorted the ship wrecked party to New Plymouth'. See label attached verso and in bowl on front. Length 39.5 cm. Width 26 cm.
