Description:
The Art-Union, Volumes I - X (1839-1848), Volume VIII With Fox Talbot Calotype Photograph. [Hodgson & Graves, London, 1839-1848]. In ten quarto (290 x 230 mm) volumes, the first five volumes with in-text woodcut illustrations, the sixth to tenth with out-of-text illustrations in the form of lithographs and steel engravings, the key June 1846 issue with original talbotype (calotype) photograph of a table set for tea (86 x 168 mm) by William Henry Fox Talbot, tipped-in with the tissue guard intact. All volumes bound in contemporary gilt-ruled half morocco over marbled papered boards, spines with gilt-lettered titles and years, and raided bands. [William Henry Fox Talbot invented the calotype (also known as talbotype), a negative-positive process using a paper negative, in 1840. The Art-Union was founded by publishers Hodgson & Graves in 1839 and quickly established itself as the most influential and prestigious British art periodical of its day.]
