Description:
A rare black opal and diamond ring centring a black opal fashioned as an oval cabochon which is distinguished by a distinct Chinese writing pattern and play-of-colour predominantly in vivid greens, blues, and reddish orange, weighing approximately 8.70 carats, within a border of brilliant-cut diamonds together weighing approximately 1.01 carats, mounted in 18ct white gold, size O. Other Notes: Due to their scarcity, black opals are highly sought after, and are the most valued of all opal types. Nestled in Northern New South Wales, Lightning Ridge was first discovered to contain opal deposits in 1873 and mining commenced in 1901. Lightning Ridge, whence this lot originated, is one of the few places in the world where the precious and highly prized black opal is found.
