Description:
A rare William & Mary walnut marquetry longcase clock, the eight day movement with anchor escapement striking brass dial and chapter ring signed 'Morgan Herbert, London'. The case with fine walnut veneers and elaborate marquetry depicting flowers, foliage, birds around a central urn of flowers. The hood with ebonised barley twist supports, caddy top with turned ebonised finials. England, circa 1700. Height 234 cm. Provenance: J. B. Hawkins, Cammeray, Sydney, 1972, Literature: Britten's old clocks and watches and their makers, published London 1956, listed Morgan Herbert, Clock-Watch 1690.
