Description:
Monument at Botany Bay to the memory of La Perouse second quarter of the 19th century Watercolour Bennett, John John 21 x 16 cm Signed Jno Bennett lower right and titled in ink to margin Original cedar frame 21 x 16 cm This previously undocumented watercolour depicts the monument to Jean-Francois de Galaup La Perouse (1741-1788). It was designed by George Cookney and erected in 1825 at the instigation of Baron de Bougainville as a memorial to his tragic final expedition. La Perouse arrived at Botany Bay on 24th January 1788, incredibly just days after Phillip, but poor weather prevented him entering the bay. Arthur Phillip had already started to move the settlement to Port Jackson. John Hunter in the Sirius, still at Botany Bay assisted La Perouse to anchor where he remained for six weeks. On the 10th March 1788 he set sail in his two ships La Boussole and L'Astrolabe and was never heard of again. By 1828 it was believed he was wrecked off the New Hebrides.
