Description:
A rare Thomas Norman Lovatt terracotta pottery bust of 'Te Rangi Pikanga', finely modelled with moko kauae, a woven cloak to her shoulders and two hei tiki to her neck; the base incised with the subject's name and 'T.N. Lovatt, Temuka'. Te Rangi Pikinga born circa 1800 was an important figure in Ngati Apa history, witnessing the turmoil of inter-tribal warfare. As a young woman she was captured by a war party led by Te Rauparaha and his nephew Te Rangihaeata, the latter's subsequent chiefly marriage to Pikanga affected a peace between Ngati Apa and Ngati Toa. 23 cm x 13 cm x 19 cm.
