Description:
An Important early colonial cedar and ebony out-swept bracket foot press on chest Australian, Sydney Circa 1825-30 128 x 236 x 59 cm Based on a design by P. & M.A. Nicholson (1826) Pictorial Dictionary British Design p. 288 (chest section), with cedar panelled doors with blocked corners and ebony bollection mouldings. Original sliding clothes trays, brass astragal cover strip, the chest base of five drawers cockbeaded in Nsw Rose Mahogany (dysoxylon fraserianum) strung to the drawer fronts in pine raised on a scalloped base with out-swept French feet and cross-banded in ribbon cedar. The use of pure ebony in Australian furniture is rare. One other known press on chest of this out-swept bracket feet form (Ferry/sovereign Hill collection). 128 cm wide, 59 cm deep, 236 cm high.
