Description:
A superb Regency sofa table, of Pembroke type in fine calamander and rosewood veneer over mahogany. The top is inlaid with a gilt brass scrolling acanthus leaf border and stringing, and mounted with gilt bronze borders. The four bow shaped legs, also known as spider legs, and central roundel are mounted in neoclassical motifs in gilt bronze and terminate in gilt bronze capped feet on brass castors. Attributed to George Oakley. The firm of George Oakley produced stylish furniture in the Grecian taste during the decades spanning the turn of the 19th century, and was one of the pioneers of 'Buhl' inlay, a form of decoration that regained popularity during the early years of the Regency. Fashionable materials such as rosewood, mahogany and calamander were often used in Oakley's furniture, combined with inlays of satinwood and ebony, and brass stars and bands of metalwork. The highclass furniture made by George Oakley earned him a Royal appointment and a contemporary reputation for fine craftsmanship. Examples very similar to this table include a pair of card tables in the Royal collection and a sofa table in the V&, a. English circa 1810. 71 x 148.5 x 65 cm. Provenance: W F Bradshaw Pty Ltd, Sydney, 1980
