Description:
A gold mounted micromosaic demi-parure, mid 19th century, comprising: a necklace designed as a graduated line of 26 micromosaic vignettes alternatively depicting peasants in regional costumes between foliate sprays, applied on opaque green glass within a hammered gold surround, between circular link connectors, circumference approximately 410 mm; together with a pair of earrings, en suite, length approximately 26 mm. (2) Accompanied by a fitted box. LITERATURE Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micromosaics: Private Collections, Movement Publishing, 2016, p.237 (another example, illustrated). OTHER NOTES Special thanks to Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel for helping to identify the micromosaics as based upon etchings by Bartolomeo Pinelli (1771-1835) of peasants in regional costumes. Engravings from his book La Raccolta di Cinquanta Costumi Pittoreschi, Lorenzo Lazaro alle Covervile, Rome, 1809, were widely used in micromosaics, especially in jewellery.
