1909 - 1915 Fort Gellibrand Squadron Order book kept by the Officer-in-Charge, Garrison Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps / 13th A.M.C. Field Ambulance, with many pages of manuscript entries. Some examples: 7.2.14 (page 90) 'Divine Service will be held tomorrow as follows: Roman Catholic - Time & Place not yet settled. Hebrew - Fall-in at Brigade H'quarters @ 10:50am. Protestant - Brigade Parade Ground at 11:30am.' 9.2.14 (page 92) 'Members of the Hebrew Denomination are notified that special arrangements have been made for Kosher meals to be drawn for their use and cooked in a special kitchen at 49th Infantry....' 13.2.14 (page 96) 'The Corp will parade at 7:30am in connection with the manouvers. An Advance Guard under Captain Jona will parade @ 6:15am. Midday meal to be carried in haversacks & water bottles filled. Only special details to be left in Camp. Field Hospital & Bell Tents and all necessary equipment to be carried.' 11.8.14 (page 108) 'Applications for Enlistment in the Expeditionary force for Europe will be received from members of the Corps on minimum years of age and over...' 22.10.14 (page 122) 'It is notified for information that Lieut. Petre of the Aviation Corps will make a flight this morning or afternoon in the vicinity of Barwon Heads and Queenscliff.' Many of the entries in this fascinating (though dilapidated) book are signed by Captain J. L. Jona, Commanding Officer (1888 - 1961). Jona was educated at Prince Alfred College, Adelaide and at Adelaide and Melbourne Universities. M.D. Had practice at 23 Douglas Parade, Wiilamstown and then at 124 Glenferrie Rd. Hawthorn. Vic. Active in Jewish, Communal and Sporting Fields. President of Toorak Synagogue (Melb Hebrew Cong), 1938 - 1940. Chairman of Victorian Jewish Advisory Board, 1940. President of Hawthorn Football Club. Father of Walter Jona, Minister in several Victorian Liberal Governments.
