Description:
Four Doulton Saltglazed, George Tinworth stoneware 'Boy Musicians', with impressed factory marks and artist's monogram, circa 1905, height 12 cm. Provenance: Alan Landis, Sydney. Literature: Desmond Eyles, 'The Doulton Lambeth Wares', illustration no 24 for similar examples. Other Notes: Tinworth modelled at least 55 figures of boys, including two conductors, playing some 37 different instruments, but not all were put into production. The figures were partly moulded and partly modelled, and there are minor variations in facial expressions, hats, positioning of limbs etc. Tinworth began work on this set circa 1889, and was still adding to it in 1910. One hundred of these figures were made in 1910-11 with white faces, most of these went to Australia.
